You may have heard you child talking about Fawnzy. He is a week old Fawn whose mother was hit by a car. My cousins are looking after it on their dairy farm. It was so young when it was found that its hooves were still soft.
They are feeding it goats milk from a bottle and my aunt is even waking up for the midnight feedings.
It's about the sweetest thing EVER!
Here are a few pictures I shared with the class.

In preparation for our 'Toy Store' grand opening next Wednesday we have been learning about Media Literacy. We are currently making posters to advertise the sale to put in the Kindergarten classrooms. The children have compared cereal boxes, made their own cereal ad online and even designed a soda pop called 'Burp Cola'. Check out some of their work!
Some children were wanting to try more at home so here is the link to the pbs kids site we have used. http://pbskids.org/dontbuyit/advertisingtricks/

We had lots of fun with Mark Legault a City of Ottawa paramedic. We even got to go inside the truck and ask lots of questions.
Grade One News: Our Dictionaries
We are happy to announce that our school has purchased a personal dictionary for each grade one student. These dictionaries will be a very helpful tool as we develop our writing and reading skills. We will keep this personal dictionary throughout the primary grades so it is important that we take good care of it.
Parents, please look through our dictionaries with us, help us to fill in the first page with our personal information, and return the book to school.
Thank you!
Our Homework Books
We have a new homework routine for the balance of the school year.
Each student has received a new notebook, and a calendar for the month which lists homework tasks for each week, Monday through Friday. These tasks will provide skills practice in different subject areas, and let you know what we are learning across the curriculum in grade one. Parents are encouraged to assist their children in reading the instructions, and getting used to the routine of completing these tasks. The Homework Books are due back at school at the end of the month. Please read the instructions inside the book and see the sample page to help you get started.
Thank you for your support!

Today We celebrated the 100th day of SCHOOL!!! The children are all very proud of being '100 days smarter'. Our activities ranged from predicting how far 100 footsteps would take us, skip counting, finger painting to make 100 gum balls, to phys ed. activities in the gym and having a 100 second dance party. What a busy day! Our 100 day activities will be ongoing throughout the week as our Math focus is now Number Sense and Numeration. We will be posting some pictures for you to view through out the week.
Attention- Colder Classroom this Thursday, February 6
Our school will be taking part in National Sweater Day on Thursday, February 6! National Sweater Day is an annual event organized by World Wildlife Fund Canada. On National Sweater Day, WWF asks Canadians to turn down thermostats by two degrees Celsius at home, at school and at work to highlight the role that energy conservation plays in preventing climate change.
Our school building will be a little chillier on February 6, so we
are asking that all students wear or bring a sweater to school.
We are looking forward to a cozy day in the classroom!
Feel free to check out this You Tube Video about National Sweater Day.

Hello wonderful St. James families. My name is Meghan Gelineau and I am thrilled to be working with your beautiful children for the rest of the year. I shared this family picture with your children in class and figured that it would be helpful for you to be able to put a face to the name.
I am married to my husband Gil and my two sons are named Gilbert (3yrs) and Callum (15 months).
There will be student led conferences coming up in February where I will have a chance to meet you all. Stay tuned for more info to come.

The students with their 3-D communities...
As we near the end of our time together, I thought this was quite sweet and fitting. As you now know, my official last day is Friday, January 31st. Mrs. Gelineau will begin her time with these wonderful students on February 3rd! They are lucky to have her. I am certain that it'll be a smooth transition...things will pick up right where they are left off. As I said in my letter, I will really miss every student but will be back to visit-as I promised them! They all have a dear place in my heart!
Thank you.

HALLOWEEN WAS VERY SPOOKY WITH THIS CUTE BUNCH!
In November we spoke a lot about Peace as a part of our Remembrance Day preparations. I read the students a book called "A Million Visions of Peace". This book had drawings from children around the world and their vision of peace. After reading the story, the students then illustrated THEIR vision of peace. They were displayed on this board in the class in November but are now all put into a book we made in the classroom. We made our own Visions of Peace book! Students are always welcome to look at it as a reminder of the importance of peace.
As part of our new weekly WORD WALL WORDS, 2 of the 5 new words are places on these hands by the door. As students leave the class, they tap the words and whisper them to themselves out the door!
We read "A Bad Case Of Stripes" by David Shannon and then made our own stripes using PATTERNS!! We have MASTERED patterns now!
Below, the students worked in groups to create patterns that they see every day! They did a fantastic job!
Here the students created 2-D shapes with Geo-boards! This was very fun...especially in pyjamas!
Below the students worked on their posters about being a good Samaritan! This was the final task for our one week study on Digital Citizenship. These are now laminated and put up in our coat room...these posters were incredible!
