What Are We Up To?
- Language: We are working on narrative writing. We will be reading fairy tales and other fictional stories, retelling, and talking about the beginning, middle and end. We will be discussing the elements of a narrative piece (setting, characters, problem, the events and the solution). After practice identifying these in stories the children will have an opportunity to write their own narrative piece.
- Media Literacy: We will be making posters and talking about advertising to entice the kindergarten shoppers who will be visiting our classroom toy store.
- Math: We are continuing our work on Number Sense and Numeration- addition and subtraction and money. Students are expected to identify Canadian coins by name as well as their value and represent money amounts to 20 cents.
- We will also begin our Measurement unit on time.
- Specific Expectations:
- – estimate, measure, and describe the passage of time, through investigation using nonstandard units (e.g., number of sleeps; number of claps; number of flips of a sand timer);
– read demonstration digital and analogue clocks, and use them to identify benchmark times (e.g., times for breakfast, lunch, dinner; the start and end of school; bedtime) and to tell and write time to the hour and half-hour in everyday settings; - Science: Energy in Our Lives- (continued) With visit from an electrician- discussing sources of energy as well as electrical safety.
- Expectations:
- 1. Understand and assess uses of energy at home, school, and in the community and suggest ways to use less energy
- 2. Investigate how different types of energy is used in daily life.
- 3. Demonstrate an understanding that energy is something that is needed to make things happen, and that the sun is the principal source of energy for the earth.
- The Arts: Drama and Dance.
- Religion: Preparing our hearts and journeying through the season of Lent in preparation for Easter. Our class along with the grade 1/2 class are preparing to lead the Easter/Education Week mass. We will be preforming a number of songs that we have been learning.
- Phys. ed: Working on Movement Exploration through activities under the following categories
- Balance
- Jumping and Landing
- Transfer of Weight
- Rhythm and Movement
- Health: Making connections for healthy living and personal safety; unhealthy habits and healthy alternatives (e.g., excessive screen time or video game usage, smoking) (Visit from a paramedic as well as a bike safety and helmet wearing presentation)
